The Northern Virginia Technology Council last week recognized seven Washington area companies in its annual Hot Tickets competition, an annual awards ceremony in its 15th year. ThreatQuotient, Zoomdata, LifeFuels and LiveSafe won innovation awards in their respective categories.

LiveSafe won the consumer and enterprise innovation award for a mobile application that allows people to report dangerous incidents. Zoomdata won the big data and analytics innovation award for a business-facing analytics platform called Fusion. ThreatQuotient won the cybersecurity and safety innovation award for an Internet threat-detection platform called ThreatQ. And LifeFuels won the health and wearables innovation award for a water bottle-based fitness-and-nutrition tracking system connected to a mobile app.

The competition started May 23 and lasted four weeks, with companies in each category facing off in an online voting competition. A panel of judges selected by NVTC used the vote totals as just one factor in picking winners for each category.

In the end, none of the weekly vote winners ended up winning an award. Zoomdata, for instance, won the data and analytics award despite finishing dead last in week two voting.

In addition to the innovation awards, Canvas won for its company culture and Avizia won the hottest start-up award. Fairfax education technology company Ellucian, which sold to a private equity firm for $3.5 billion last year, won the hottest exit award.
